NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Closing a strong first weekend of the 2013-14 season, Manchester University narrowly missed toppling a top 20-ranked D3Hoops.com Ohio Northern University squad Saturday, Nov. 16.
The Spartans (1-1) held a 45-41 lead on the Polar Bears (2-0) in the final of the 2013 Main View Tip-Off Tournament. However, ONU reeled off 10 unanswered points at that stage en route to a 53-48 victory.
Sophomore guard Katie Arterburn (Indianapolis, Ind.) came off the bench to spark the second half comeback. She drained three treys as part of an 11-point night. Junior guard Jocelyn Hamilton (Columbus, Ind.), as one of two all-tournament honorees, was just off the pace of a triple-double, tallying six points, seven rebounds, nine assists and two steals. Senior forward Erynn Meiklejohn (Fort Wayne, Ind.) contributed eight points and five rebounds and gained all-tourney honors as well after a 24-point, nine-rebound weekend.
In a low-scoring first half, where the count was 12-11 all the way until the 5:35 mark, the visitors went on a10-2 run late to open a nine-point cushion. However, in front of a loud crowd on its home floor at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena, the Black and Gold pulled within four at the break (24-20). ONU started strong in the second frame, opening an 11-point lead, but the Spartans, behind the long range shooting of Arterburn, were up to the challenge, going on a 19-4 stretch, for the 45-41 advantage.
MU resumes its season Saturday, Nov. 23, with a 3 p.m. EST tip-off at the University of Chicago.
