NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Manchester University softball team honored its four seniors – Katelynn Skeens, Sydney Thompson, Krystal Sellers, and Miranda Boggs – during an on-field ceremony Saturday afternoon prior to first pitch. The four players were joined on the field by members of their families.
Due to the cold temperatures and steady rain, Manchester and Mount St. Joseph completed only one of its two scheduled contests. The league-leading Lions extended their winning streak to 14 games following a 9-4 win. MSJ (33-5, 14-1 HCAC) was receiving votes in this week's NFCA Division III Top 25 Poll.
The wet and slippery conditions affected many balls put in play on Saturday afternoon. The Lions opened the game with six runs in the top of the first, all six runs were unearned.
Manchester battled back with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Miranda Boggs (Frankfurt, Ind. / Frankfurt) hit a two-run home run to left. It was her fourth home run of the season.
The Spartans would add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Alexis Mokos (Cedar Lake, Ind. / Hanover Central) double down the left-field line to score Kendal Torrence (Lowell, Ind. / Lowell). Boggs then drove in her third run of the ball game with a hard-hit ball down the line in right.
The steady rain forced a 28-minute rain delay in the top of the seventh inning. Once the field was worked on, play resumed.
The Lions managed to escape a bases loaded, one-out jam in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.
Manchester 10-21, 6-7 HCAC will be back at home tomorrow afternoon against Transylvania University at 1 and 3 p.m.
