NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – Manchester University hosted Kalamazoo College in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at the MU Softball Field. The Spartans fell in game one but came back in the second game of the day and earned a dramatic 10-9, walk-off victory in eight innings.
Game 1 – Kalamazoo 8, Manchester 2 – Box Score
The Hornets grabbed the first game of the day, winning 8-2. The Hornets had three extra base hits and took advantage of five errors by the Spartans.
Game 2 – Mancehster 10, Kalamazoo 9 – 8 innings – Box Score
Game two of the afternoon was a back-and-forth affair that saw both teams overcome multi-run deficits.
The Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Miranda Boggs hit a home run to left-center field to give MU a 1-0 advantage. Later in the first, Makenzi Nyland singled up the middle to drive in the second Spartan run of the game.
The Hornets scored the next four runs of the game to grab a 4-2 lead.
In the fifth, Skeens hit a two-run single up the middle that tied the game at 4-4. Manchester took the lead in the sixth inning following a two-run double by Sydney Thompson. Skeens drove in her third run of the game with a single to give MU a 7-4 lead.
Kalamazoo battled to the very final out in the seventh, scoring five straight runs with two down. Manchester managed to tie the game in the seventh to force extra innings.
In the home half of the eighth, Katelynn Skeens concluded her stellar game at the plate with a walk-off double to center that scored Thompson.
Manchester now sits at 10-12 this season while Kalamazoo moved to 12-13. The Spartans will travel to Calvin on Monday April 15. First pitch against the Knights is slated for 3:30 p.m.
