HANOVER, Ind. – The Manchester University softball team won a pair of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference road games on Saturday afternoon after downing Hanover College in a doubleheader. The Spartans have now won three straight league games and improved to 8-8, 3-1 HCAC on the season.
Game 1 – Manchester 6, Hanover 5 – Box Score
The Manchester University Spartans used a six-run, top of the 5th inning to rally past host Hanover College in the first game of Saturday's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.
Trailing 4-0 in the 5th, Haley Perez (Portage, Ind. / Portage) started Manchester's rally with a one-out double to center field. Krystal Sellers (Bourbon, Ind. /Triton) hit an RBI single to left field that got the Spartans on the score board; Sellers advanced to second on the play. Kendal Torrence (Lowell, Ind. / Lowell) then followed with an RBI single up the middle that scored Sellers. After a stolen base by Torrence, Miranda Boggs (Frankfurt, Ind. / Frankfurt) joined kept the rally alive with a run-scoring single up the middle.
Katelynn Skeens (Gas City, Ind. / Mississinewa) tied the game with an RBI single to left. The Spartans took the lead for good in game one following a two-run single to left by Makenzi Nyland (Avon, Ind. / Avon). All six Manchester runs came with two outs.
The Panthers made things interesting late in the 7th inning. HC got within a run after an RBI single by Lily Beurman. Hanover then loaded the bases with two outs, but Haley Perez struck out Ashley Swearingen looking for the game's final out.
Game 2 – Manchester 11, Hanover 2 - Box Score
The Spartans jumped out to a quick 4-0 right out of the gates in the second game on Saturday. A pair of errors by the Panthers contributed to the first Manchester run of the game. Sydney Thompson (Logansport, Ind. / Logansport) then crushed a three-run home run to put the Spartans up four in the top of the 1st inning.
Manchester added three more runs in the top half of the 2nd. Alexis Mokos (Cedar Lake, Ind. / Hanover Central) drove in a run with a single through the left side. With pair of runners on, Katelynn Skeens hit a two-run double to left center. Skeens is leading the HCAC with .483 batting average and19 RBI this season.
Sloppy defense by Hanover late in game two allowed the Spartans to score four more runs in the top of the 7th inning. Miranda Boggs finished the contest with three hits, two runs scored, and one RBI.
Lizzie Smith (Indianapolis, Ind. / Franklin Central) threw a complete game in the pitcher's circle and earned her third win.
Manchester (8-8, 3-1 HCAC) is schedule to play tomorrow at #11 Trine University. Tomorrow's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
