Spartans Take Two on Thursday, Improve to 4-2

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Manchester University softball team improved to 4-2 this season behind a pair of solid victories on Thursday down in the Sunshine State.  Manchester topped both St. Lawrence and D'Youville College.

Manchester 6, St. Lawrence 1 – Box Score

The Spartans took down the St. Lawrence Saints behind a five-run 4th inning on Thursday ornign in Florida.

The Saints opened the scoring by tallying their only run of the game in the top of the 1st.  From that point on it was all Spartans.  Manchester tied the game in the home half of the 3rdKatelynn Skeens (Gas City, Ind. / Mississinewa) singled to score Kendal Torrence (Lowell, Ind. / Lowell). 

Haley Perez (Portage, Ind. / Portage) began the five-run 4th with a single to center that put MU ahead 2-1.  With the bases loaded, Krystal Sellers (Bourbon, Ind. / Triton) drew a walked that plated another run.  Sydney Thompson (Logansport, Ind. / Logansport) was then hit by a pitch that forced home another Manchester run.  Skeens then followed with a single to shallow right field.  The inning was capped by a sac fly from Alexis Mokos (Cedar Lake, Ind. / Hanover Central).

Pitcher Lizzie Smith (Indianapolis, Ind. /Franklin Central) was strong inside the pitcher's circle all game.  Smith won her second game of the season after throwing a complete game.  She scattered give hits and struck out two batters. 

Manchester 13, D'Youville 5 – Box Score

The Spartans completed the sweep of Thursday's twinbill with an emphatic 13-5 win over D'Youville College. 

Alexis Mokos started the scoring for the Spartans with an RBI single in the top of the 1stMakenzi Nyland (Avon, Ind. / Avon) added a sac fly to center and Miranda Boggs (Frankfort, Ind. / Frankfort) capped the scoring in the opening frame with an RBI single to right.

Manchester picked right back up where it left off offensively in the top of the 2ndSydney Thompson hit a sac fly that scored Alexis MokosKatelynn Skeens drove in her second run of the ballgame with a single to left.  Nyland then followed with a two-run single up the middle that gave Manchester University a 7-0 lead.

MU increased its advantage to 9-0 in the 5th following an error by D'Youville that allowed a pair of Spartans to score. 

D'Youville College mounted a slight rally of their own, scoring all five of its runs in the home half of the 5th.

Zoie Penn (Clinton, Ind. / Riverton Park) put the Spartans ahead, 10-5, following an RBI single to left.  Savannah Delgado (Kokomo, Ind. / Talyor) drove home another run in the top of the 7th.  Freshman Darcie Patton (Marion, Ind. / Mississinewa) also hit an RBI single in the top of the 7th.

Haley Perez improved to 2-1 in the pitcher's circle this year.  Manchester (4-2) will take on SUNY Platz and Ripon tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. respectively as its Spring Break trip continues.
