CLERMONT, Fla. – The 2019 Spring Trip for the Manchester University softball team continued on Tuesday morning as the Spartans played Trinity (Conn.) and Clarkson.
Game 3 – Manchester 10, Trinity (Conn.) 9 – 9 Innings - Box Score
The first game of the day, and third game of the week, for the Spartans went into extra innings. The Spartans battled to a 10-9 victory over the Trinity College Bantams.
The Bantams jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings of play, however the Spartans' bat answered with three runs in the top of the 5th. Katelynn Skeens (Gas City, Ind. / Mississnewa) scored Krystal Sellers (Bourbon, Ind. / Triton) on a fielder's choice. Alexis Mokos (Cedar Lake, Ind. / Hanover Central) then followed a with a two-run double to left that drew the Spartans within a run.
Manchester took a later lead in the top of the 7th inning as Makenzi Nyland (Avon, Ind. / Avon) tripled to right that scored a pair. MU would go ahead 6-5.
Trinity battled back and tied the game in the home half of the 7th.
In the top of the 9th, it was again Nyland who would deliver a clutch hit for the Spartans. With the bases loaded, Nyland smacked a double that scored all three runners and gave Manchester University a 10-7 lead.
The Spartans would hold on for a 10-9 victory. Haley Perez earned her first win in the pitcher's circle after tossing 5.1 innings of relief against the Bantams.
Game 4 – Clarkson 11, Manchester 9 - Box Score
In game two of the day, Clarkson rallied to top Manchester by a final score of 11-9.
The Spartans jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but the Knights' offense rallied late for the two-run victory.
Back-to-back doubles by Skeens and Mokos had the Spartans out in front 2-1 in the bottom of the 1st. Skeens then homered in her next at-bat to increase the Spartans' advantage over the Knights. Freshman Corey Uetrecht (Leo, Ind. / Leo) hit a two-run double in the bottom of the 3rd.
After Clarkson rallied in the 5th to take a 6-5 lead, the Spartans answered right back with four runs in the home half of the frame. Mokos started the rally with a sac fly to left. Two more Spartans scored following an error and a fielder's choice. Kendal Torrence (Lowell, Ind. / Lowell) capped the four-run inning with an RBI single.
Clarkson battled right back and took advantage of some key misplays in the field by the Manchester defense in the 6th and 7th innings.
Manchester stands 2-2 through two days of their Spring Break trip. MU will have tomorrow off before playing St. Lawrence and D'Youville on Thursday at 9 and 11:15 a.m. respectively.
