Spartan Shorts: Coach Josh Dzurick's Spartans, standing 14-16 overall and 6-4 in the league, have won four straight loop outings including a 12-10 and 8-0 sweep of Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute April 18 … The Black and Gold got a little bit of everything in route to a pair of critical HCAC triumphs Wednesday. In the opener, MU needed every bit of a seven-run sixth inning rally to overcome a determined Rose-Hulman bunch on its home field. The march from a once 10-5 deficit was made complete by freshman catcher Alexis Mokos (St. John, Ind.) drilling a two-run single as part of a three-for-four, one-run-scored, five-RBI effort to tie the wild affair at 10-10 and junior outfielder Krystal Sellers (Bourbon, Ind.) sending in the eventual winning runs with a two-run safety of her own to highlight a two-hit effort. Freshman pitchers Page Magner (North Vernon, Ind.) and Haley Perez (Portage, Ind.) combined to lock the decision down firing two and two-third innings of shutout softball while surrendering only one hit. Perez' arm also came into play in the nightcap. She added to her first collegiate save with a complete-game, two-hit shutout replete with a pair of strikeouts to spark an 8-0 Spartans' decision. The offense took advantage of five home team errors, as junior third baseman Kate Skeens (Gas City, Ind.) wrapped up a four-hit night with two singles, and junior first baseman Sydney Thompson (Logansport, Ind.) tallied a pair of safeties and drove in a run. Senior second baseman Laurren Ladwig (Crown Point, Ind.) added her name to the game two highlight list with her 15th home run, a two-run blast, which tied the HCAC's single-season record … North Manchester's Sultana of Swat continues a royal residence on the conference and national statistical charts. Ladwig is first in total home runs, second in home runs per game, ninth in slugging percentage and 13th in total bases nationally. In the league, she's first in round-trippers and RBI (33) while ranking fourth in batting average (.444) among the numbers. Perez' save at Rose-Hulman was the 17th in loop play this season, as the freshman is only the 10th pitcher to do so. Looking deeper on the conference charts, senior Madisyn Walter (Hanna, Ind.) is 10th in strikeouts (26), she and Perez are tied for ninth in wins (five), and Perez' 2.78 earned run average is ninth-lowest. Skeens' .426 batting average is among the top 10 (No. 9) as is Mokos' 22 RBI (No. 9), Thompson's four big flies and Skeens' three home runs (tied for fifth and eighth, respectively), and senior outfielder Mallorie Jennings' (Bourbon, Ind.) 10 stolen bases (tied for sixth) … The 2018 league schedule winds down next week, as Manchester University hosts Bluffton University Wednesday, April 25, and travels to Transylvania University Saturday, April 28. First pitch times are 3:30 p.m. against BU and 1 p.m. versus TU.
