TERRE HAUTE, IND. – Coach Josh Dzurick's squad got a little bit of everything in route to a pair of critical Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference victories Wednesday, April 18.
In the opener, Manchester University needed every bit of a seven-run sixth inning rally to overcome a determined Rose-Hulman bunch on its home field. The Black and Gold rally from a once 10-5 deficit was made complete by freshman catcher Alexis Mokos (St. John, Ind.) drilling a two-run single as part of a three-for-four, one-run-scored, five-RBI effort to tie the wild affair at 10-10 and junior outfielder Krystal Sellers (Bourbon, Ind.) sending in the eventual winning runs with a two-run safety of her own to highlight a two-hit effort. Freshman pitchers Page Magner (North Vernon, Ind.) and Haley Perez (Portage, Ind.) combined to lock the decision down firing two and two-third innings of shutout softball while surrendering only one hit.
Perez' arm also came into play in the nightcap. She added to her first collegiate save with a complete-game, two-hit shutout replete with a pair of strikeouts to spark an 8-0 Spartans' triumph. MU's offense took advantage of five Fightin' Engineer errors, as junior third baseman Kate Skeens (Gas City, Ind.) wrapped up a four-hit night with two singles, and junior first baseman Sydney Thompson (Logansport, Ind.) tallied a pair of safeties and drove in a run. Senior second baseman Laurren Ladwig (Crown Point, Ind.) added her name to the game two highlight list with her 15th home run of the season, a two-run blast in the top of the fourth.
The Spartans (14-16, 6-4 HCAC) take a four-game conference win streak into a home weekend twin bill versus Hanover College Saturday, April 21. Start time is 1 p.m. at Spartan Field.
