Big innings turn away Black and Gold

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Junior third baseman Kate Skeens (Gas City, Ind.) and sophomore outfielder Shakira Perez (Elkhart, Ind.) each registered multiple-hit efforts during game two of a non-conference twin bill Tuesday, April 17.

Skeens and Perez both laced a pair of singles off Calvin College freshman pitcher Elle Brost. The safeties brought a small but energetic crowd braving cold early spring temperatures at Spartan Field to its feet as part of a seven-hit attack for Coach Josh Dzurick's crew. Unfortunately, for MU fans, the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Knights staved off the home side resume in both contests winning 9-0 and 5-1.

Brost side-stepped a one-out, bases-loaded threat in the fifth. She managed a fielder's choice groundout and then forced a fly ball to leave the sacks jammed. The formerly No. 20-ranked team on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll put together a four-run fourth during their plate appearances.

Game one was all Calvin. A six-run rally over the third through fifth frames broke up a scoreless draw between senior pitcher Madisyn Walter (Hanna, Ind.) and CC's Anna Gernant. The visiting hurler allowed only two singles and struck out 10 in route to the complete-game shutout.

Manchester University (12-16) returns to action with a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Rose-Hulman Wednesday, April 18. First pitch at Rose-Hulman Softball Field in Terre Haute is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
