NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – It was a story of two evenly matched teams at Manchester University's Spartan Field Wednesday, April 11.
The host Spartans and visiting Defiance College squared in a pair of contests that gave fans in attendance their money's worth. Despite a couple of close-knit 4-3 and 6-3 defeats for the home side, there were many positives to be taken away by Coach Josh Dzurick's team.
Game one's most significant highlight was senior second baseman Laurren Ladwig (Crown Point, Ind.) adding to her single-season home run record. Her 14th big fly of the year occurred in the seventh with a runner on to trim a once 4-1 deficit to 4-3. MU appeared on the verge of doing more damage, getting two more on base, but the Yellowjackets managed to sidestep the threat.
The nightcap saw more excitement. The two sides went back and forth, as MU (10-14 overall, 2-4 HCAC) posted three runs in the first, but Defiance answered with single tallies in the second, third and fifth for a 3-3 tie. The visitors closed out the sweep plating three in their half of the eighth, while a two-on, nobody-out rally for the Spartans was put down. Junior third baseman Kate Skeens (Gas City, Ind.) picked up two hits, scored once and drove in one, while senior outfielder Mallorie Jennings (Bourbon, Ind.) drove in two with a single.
The Spartans are scheduled to have a home and away weekend, traveling to Alma College of Michigan Saturday, April 14, for a 1 p.m. doubleheader and then hosting Kalamazoo College of Michigan Sunday, April 15, for a 12 p.m. twin bill.
