Rugged Relief: Perez nightcap effort sends MU to split

HOLLAND, MICH. – A quartet of multiple-hit totals added in to four shutout innings of one-hit pitching from freshman hurler Haley Perez (Portage, Ind.) proved the successful recipe for a non-conference split Thursday, March 29.

Senior outfielder Mallorie Jennings (Bourbon, Ind.) generated two singles, a double, a run-batted-in and scored a run to lead a 12- hit offensive attack for Coach Josh Dzurick's squad. Junior shortstop Miranda Boggs (Frankfort, Ind.), senior second baseman Laurren Ladwig (Crown Point, Ind.) and junior third baseman Kate Skeens (Gas City, Ind.) ended with two safeties apiece which included each of them registering a double.

The Black and Gold, moving to 8-10 after being blanked in an 8-0, six-inning loss to the host Hope College Flying Dutchmen in game one, used run-scoring singles from Boggs, junior catcher Sydney Thompson (Logansport, Ind.) and Ladwig to break a 2-2 fourth-inning deadlock. It was all Perez would need, as she glided through the home line-up, surrendering only the one hit, striking out two and not giving up a free pass over the final four frames to gain her second victory.

MU continues a six-game weekly schedule Saturday, March 31. They opened the 2018 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference campaign with a trip to Mt. St. Joseph University for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
