Black and Gold back home for HCAC-MIAA clash

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Manchester University returns to the Midwest Monday, March 26, resuming its 2018 home schedule.

Game details: The Spartans (7-7) welcome St. Mary's College of Indiana out of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association to Spartan Field for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader … Live audio, stats, and video are accessible via links at www.muspartans.com, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics … The Belles have had a stranglehold on recent series history. Since being swept by the Black and Gold in 2005, SMC has won 17 of the last 20 meetings which include two triumphs on their home field a year ago.

Spartan Shorts: Coach Josh Dzurick's squad, going 5-5 over spring break, enjoyed the warm air and sunshine in the Orlando area to the tune of a .349 batting average that featured 27 extra base hits including 11 home runs. Senior second baseman Laurren Ladwig (Crown Point, Ind.) led the juggernaut attack, clouting seven round-trippers, driving in 16 of the team's 61 runs and hitting a stratospheric .567 to go along with a 1.333 slugging percentage over the six days … The plate wasn't the only place the Spartans excelled in the south. The freshman trio of Haley Perez (Portage, Ind.), Kendal Torrence (Lowell, Ind.) and Alex Whittig (Hartford City, Ind.) each earned their first pitching victories, and senior Madisyn Walters (Hanna, Ind.) struck out 14, delivered two complete games and turned in a 2-2 record … MU's extra-base hitting prowess is earning headlines across NCAA Division III. The Black and Gold's average of 1.5 home runs per game is second-highest, trailing only Williams College of Massachusetts (1.67) due in large part to Ladwig's .75 per game which is tops individually … Ladwig's three-run blast that triggered a 10-1, five-inning victory over Union College of New York in the Florida finale March 23 tied her single-season program record for big flies (11) in a span of only 14 contests. The senior also moved over the 100-RBI mark for her career.

Road Warriors: Dzurick's crew begins a span of six consecutive games away from their friendly confines Thursday, March 29. They face off against fellow MIAA member Hope College at Wolters Softball Stadium in Holland, Mich., for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
