Black and Gold forges split

ORLANDO, FLA. – Senior second baseman Laurren Ladwig (Crown Point, Ind.) delivered her ninth home run of the season, part of a three-for-four, two-run scored, four-RBI contest to lead Manchester University past Allegheny College of Pennsylvania Thursday, March 22.

Ladwig spurred a nine-hit, 11-run outburst from Coach Josh Dzurick's Spartans (5-7). The totals were more than enough for freshman Kendal Torrence (Lowell, Ind.) to twirl her first collegiate complete game pitching outing, as she held the Gators to three runs on four hits and struck out five over five innings in route to an 11-3 victory.

MU began its day in sunny central Florida with a hard-fought 3-1 loss to The College of Wooster of Ohio. After the Scots plated three runs in their first at-bat, freshman hurler Haley Perez (Portage, Ind.) kept them off the scoreboard for the remainder of the match-up, closing her first collegiate complete game effort with no earned runs given up on six hits while striking out two and walking four. Sophomore first baseman Makenzi Nyland (Avon, Ind.) registered two hits, and Ladwig hammered a home run to account for a large share of the Spartans' offense.

The Black and Gold wind up their spring break trip Friday, March 23, facing Juniata College of Pennsylvania and Union College of New York.
