Spartan Shorts: A juggernaut offense has propelled the Black and Gold in the early season. MU is hitting .397 over four games with five doubles, 11 home runs, and a stout .687 slugging percentage. Senior second baseman Laurren Ladwig (Crown Point, Ind.), the program's career round-trippers' leader (29), tops the individual list, hitting .529 with four big flies, eight RBI, and a stratospheric 1.235 slugging percentage. Junior catcher Sydney Thompson (Logansport, Ind.) isn't far behind, hitting at a .500 clip that includes three homers, two doubles, six RBI and a 1.188 slugging percentage. The duo is each among the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's top 10, ranking third (Ladwig) and tied for sixth (Thompson) in batting average and first (Ladwig) and tied for second (Thompson) in home runs … In the circle, the senior tandem of Mallorie Jennings (Bourbon, Ind.) and Madisyn Walters (Hanna, Ind.) each have a victory to their credit. Jennings' 2.47 earned run average leads the staff, while Walters and freshman Alex Whittig (Hartford City, Ind.) are tied for the strikeout lead (four) … Dzurick's crew returns to the Midwest and Spartan Field Monday, March 26, for a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association-HCAC twin bill versus St. Mary's College. The 3:30 p.m. doubleheader against the Belles begins four straight games against the MIAA, as they are scheduled to travel to Hope College for a 3 p.m. double-dip Thursday, March 29.
