DEFIANCE, OHIO – Four different players tallied RBI in the nightcap, but it wasn't quite enough to allow Manchester University to dodge a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader loss Wednesday, April 12.
After being stymied by Yellow Jackets starter Sarah Kaya in the opener to the tune of a complete-game three-hit shutout in a 2-0 final, the Spartans (7-17-1 overall, 0-6 HCAC) got the bats out in game two. Eight of the nine starters got into the hit column, as Coach Josh Dzurick's crew outhit their hosts 9-8.
After trailing 6-0 through two frames, Manchester University got their comeback shoes on tallying three in the fourth and one in the seventh, while freshman pitcher Tristyn Koon (Kokomo, Ind.) came out of the bullpen and locked up DC's bats on just four hits over four and a third frames. The rally was nearly added to in overcoming the early deficit, as the Black and Gold had two on with two out in the seventh before a ground out ended the contest at 6-4. Junior second baseman Laurren Ladwig (Crown Point, Ind.); junior designated player Mallorie Jennings (Bourbon, Ind.); sophomore catcher Sydney Thompson (Logansport, Ind.); and senior pinch hitter Chloe Hensley (South Bend, Ind.) all tallied run-scoring hits.
Manchester University is scheduled to continue a set of back-to-back doubleheaders Thursday, April 13, as they host Rose-Hulman. First pitch at Spartan Field is 3:30 p.m.
