FT. MYERS, FLA. – Manchester University found itself locked up in a pair of close-knit contests during the fourth competition day on its 2017 Florida spring break trip Thursday, March 23.
The Spartans, dipping to 6-9-1, saw a six-game win streak snapped with a back-and-forth 4-3 loss to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference member UW-Superior in the nightcap. Junior second baseman Laurren Ladwig (Crown Point, Ind.) closed out a memorable afternoon with two hits and two runs scored, and sophomore third baseman Kate Skeens (Gas City, Ind.) finished with a double among two hits that drove in two runs. A pair of unearned runs, including the eventual game-winner in the 7th, proved to be their undoing.
The opener saw Coach Josh Dzurick's team capture a 3-2, eight-inning nail-biter from Crown College of Minnesota. Ladwig, beginning a combined four-hit morning and afternoon, scored twice and drilled a decisive two-run home run in the top of the eighth. The round tripper was more than just a game-winner, though, as it put her atop the program's career long ball list at 21. Sophomore catcher Sydney Thompson (Logansport, Ind.) added to the offensive effort with a pair of hits.
The Black and Gold close out their annual Sunshine State sojourn Friday, March 24. They take on Florida Southwestern State College at 9 a.m. and UW-Superior at 1 p.m.
