Win streak goes to five with second straight sweep

FT. MYERS, FLA. – A starting pitching gem from junior Mallorie Jennings (Bourbon, Ind.) and a seven-hit attack helped Manchester University keep its 2017 spring break trip roll going Tuesday, March 21.

Jennings handcuffed North Central College of Illinois, striking out three and surrendering only one hit over the first six innings of the opener. The Black and Gold offense backed her with RBI singles from senior outfielder Emilee Liston (Cicero, Ind.) and junior second baseman Laurren Ladwig (Crown Point, Ind.) for a 2-0 edge going into the 7th. While the Cardinals broke through against the right-hander in the seventh with a single and home run to forge a tie, Manchester University battled the Collegiate Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe into extra frames for the second time in three days, winning 5-4 in 10. A Liston RBI double followed a run-scoring sacrifice fly from Ladwig in the top of the final inning, while the Spartans held the home side to one run and kept a possible tying run on second.

Game two saw Coach Josh Dzurick's crew jump on Crown College of Minnesota for three tallies in the first in route to a 4-2 victory. Sophomore shortstop Mandy Boggs (Frankfort, Ind.) singled twice, drove in a run and scored twice to guide the offense, while senior second baseman Chloe Hensley (South Bend, Ind.) and freshman outfielder Makenzzie Kazmierczak (South Bend, Ind.) each added run-scoring safeties. Freshman hurler Tristyn Koon (Kokomo, Ind.) gained her first collegiate win in the circle, striking out six as part of a complete-game effort.

The Spartans (5-8-1) look for continued southern success Thursday, March 23. They face Crown College of Minnesota for the third and final time on the trip in the opener at 9 a.m. and then are opposed by UW-Superior at 1 p.m.
