Spartan Shorts: The twinbill versus the Flying Dutch begins a set of six of the Black and Gold's next eight coming against the MIAA. They're scheduled to travel to Kalamazoo College Tuesday, March 7, and take on Adrian College Saturday and Sunday, March 11 and 12, at Centre College in Danville, Ky. … Coach Josh Dzurick's squad gave returning National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' World Series participant Huntington University all it could in its season opener Feb. 21. Junior Madisyn Walter (Hanna, Ind.) and freshman Tristyn Koon (Kokomo, Ind.) helped highlight the games against the Foresters with solid pitching performances. Walters, who appeared in only seven games with two starts in 2015, stepped back to the forefront of the staff in the opener, not allowing an earned run in seven frames while giving up only one extra base hit. Koon, making her first appearance in a Spartans' uniform, was just as tough on the visitors in game two, retiring the first 10 batters she faced. The two pitching gems highlighted a 3-2, eight-inning game one loss and a 1-1 second game tie that was called due to darkness after five frames. MU's offense was guided by a quartet of individuals that finished with two-or-more hits. Junior outfielder Mikayla Deisler (Goshen, Ind.) led the charge, going four for five with a run scored; sophomore third baseman Kate Skeens (Gas City, Ind.) and sophomore catcher Sydney Thompson (Logansport, Ind.) added two hits each and both had a double in their resume; and freshman first baseman Shakira Perez (Elkhart, Ind.) added two hits and joined Thompson and senior outfielder Emilee Liston (Cicero, Ind.) with an RBI … After Saturday's doubleheader, Manchester University plays its next 16 contests on the road which includes its yearly spring break trip to Florida. The Spartans return home Thursday, March 30, against another Alma College, another MIAA foe.
