Spartans open Centre trip on high note

DANVILLE, KY. – Manchester University senior right-handed pitcher MacKenzie Williams (Kendallville, Ind.) threw six and a third perfect innings as part of a sparkling complete-game victory Saturday, March 12, helping guide the Spartans to a pair of wins at Centre College.

Williams, moving to 1-1 on the season due to her first career shutout, took an unblemished work into the final frame against Adrian College of Michigan in Saturday's second contest. She worked a fly ball out to the inning's first hitter before Bulldogs' senior outfielder Rebecca Greco dropped a single into left field to break up the complete perfect game and no-hit bid. The Spartans' senior rebounded by forcing a line out to center field and a ground out to close out the 3-0 Black and Gold win.

MU's offense gave their pitcher plenty of assistance. Sophomore outfielder Mikayla Deisler (Goshen, Ind.) and freshman third baseman Kate Skeens (Gas City, Ind.) each registered two hits, while the freshman duo of catcher Maleigh Tidd (Brownstown, Ind.) and right fielder Sydney Thompson (Logansport, Ind.) had a double apiece. Junior left fielder Emilee Liston (Cicero, Ind.), Williams and Tidd all had RBIs.

In the first contest, both teams traded early home runs. Skeens launched a two-run shot in the home half of the first for MU (2-2), which Centre second baseman Ellen Stephens answered with a three-run homer in the top of the third for a 3-2 Praying Colonels' edge. From that point, starting pitchers Anna Schillinger (Fort Wayne, Ind.) for the Spartans and Jessika Young of CC allowed only five hits between them until the bottom of the seventh.

After senior designated hitter Jessica Chorak (Hammond, Ind.) singled to begin the frame, a ground ball off the bat of junior shortstop Chloe Hensley (South Bend, Ind.) was misplayed, setting up a first and third opportunity for the Black and Gold. With freshman pinch-runner Miranda Boggs (Frankfort, Ind.) advancing to third and then Hensley taking second on a stolen base soon after, the table was set for a comeback. Young momentarily held off the rally, gaining a strikeout, but Deisler and Liston stepped up with back-to-back RBI singles, sending Manchester University to a 4-3 victory.

The Spartans continue their two-day appearance at Centre College Sunday, March 13. They're scheduled to take on Adrian at 9 a.m. and the hosts at 1 p.m.
