Black and Gold race to sixth

LOUISVILLE, KY. – The junior - sophomore tandem of Daniel Baker (Okemos, Ind.) and Lucas Fontanez (Lowell, Ind.) took advantage of perfect early fall day conditions to produce strong results at the Greater Louisville Classic Saturday, Sept. 29.

They each found themselves in the best 20 individually, as Baker crossed in 26:28.85 to wind up 16th, and Fontanez was just one spot behind his teammate, ending in 26:31.6 to take 17th. Their efforts lifted Manchester University to a sixth-place team finish with 293 points.

In the women's section of the Silver competition at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park, junior standout Hannah Wappes (Columbia City, Ind.) continued an impressive third season in a Manchester University uniform.

Leading head coach Geoff Lambert's team to a sixth-place finish, just three points removed from the leading five and only 20 short of being among the first four, Wappes raced around the course in 19:02.4. Her clocking was the fastest for any Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference runner in the division, edging Hanover College's Arig Tong by just over second. She was one of two Spartans to cross the finish line in the top 20, as freshman Kelsey Tyler (Rochester, Ind.) was next for MU (19:46.87), good for 18th.

MU concludes its pre-2018 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule Saturday, Oct. 13. They are among the men's and women's fields at the Oberlin College of Ohio Interregional Rumble.
