Field events lead way in opener

HANOVER, IND. – Six Manchester University athletes wound up placing among the top five of their events at the season-opening Hanover College Invitational Saturday, March 31.

Five of the marks, leading Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Brian Cashdollar's team to seventh place in the team race (39 points), occurred in the field events. Sophomore Austin Roberts (Indianapolis, Ind.) soared to 6.26 meters to end third in the long jump to lead the pack. Fellow jumps specialists Justin Meredith, a junior from Shelbyville, Ind., and sophomore De'Lon Barnes (Los Angeles, Calif.) finish four-five in the triple jump, as Meredith hit 12.58 meters, and Barnes finished at 11.69 meters.

The throwing venue at HC's Alumni Stadium produced the remaining first fives. Senior Drew Foster (Seymour, Ind.) launched the discus 39.45 meters to end fifth, and senior Dakota Steele (Angola, Ind.) lofted the javelin 39.05 meters, also good for fifth. On the track, sophomore Daniel Baker (Okemos, Mich.) earned a fifth-place standing in the 5000 meters, crossing the line in 15:50.04.

The Spartans get back to action Saturday, April 7, as part of the field for the Taylor University Invitational.
