ANDERSON, IND. – As the calendar continued to march towards the first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, Coach Mike Kroll and his men's and women's teams had plenty of reasons to smile Saturday, Jan. 20.
Manchester University battled league rival Anderson University and Olivet College out of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with great results at AU's Bennett Natatorium. The Spartans' swept the Ravens, winning 120-105 on the men's side and 138-91 on the women's side, while posting 98 points against the Comet men and 96 points versus OC's women.
The numbers posted were bolstered by six event victories.
Junior Guerby Ruuska (Rensselaer, Ind.) led the men, claiming the 50-yard backstroke (27.38 seconds) and the 100-yard individual medley (1:00.39). Sophomore Christain Poole (Anderson, Ind.) added to his impressive 2017-18 campaign, winning the 50-yard butterfly (25.66 seconds), and junior diver Anjel Clemente (Rensselaer, Ind.) put another first in his season resume, winning the one-meter event (175.55 points).
Freshman Katie Blystone (Carmel, Ind.) guided MU's women. She won the 100-yard backstroke (1:07.13) and 50-yard butterfly (28.9 seconds). Junior Jamie McBride (Elkhart, Ind.) added the remaining event championship, hitting the pad in the 1:11.87 to win a thrilling 100-yard individual medley by two-hundredths of a second.
Manchester University concludes its pre-HCAC Championships slate Saturday, Jan. 27, taking a trip to NCAA Division II Urbana University of Ohio for dual competition.
