NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Manchester University men's soccer team earned its fourth win in five games after rolling past Mount St. Joseph 4-1 on Senior Day.
The Spartans tallied three goals in the opening half in a dominant performance. Senior Max Baker (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) scored his fifth goal of the season in the third minute to open the scoring for MU. Fellow senior Josh Jordan (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) earned the assist on the Baker goal.
Later in the first half, Nick Surber (Hebron, Ind./Hebron) scored his third goal of 2019 to put the Spartans ahead 2-0. Surber beat out two Lion defenders and then made a quick move to get past the MSJ keeper, finishing the hustle play with a left-footed strike.
In the second half, the Spartans would increase their lead to 4-0 after Cayden Holley (Centerville, Ind./Centerville) scored on a perfect ball sent into the box by Nash Walker (West Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) off a free kick.
The Lions got on the board late following a header in the 89th minute.
For the match, Manchester outshot the Lions 15-9 and held an 8-4 advantage on corner kicks.
During halftime of today's match, MU honored its senior class of Max Baker, Alex Baker, Noah Tong, Matthew Roop, Justin Winterboer, Nash Walker, and Josh Jordan. Sid Sagna and Zach Schmidt were also honored on Saturday afternoon as well.
The Spartans improved to 7-7-1 overall this season with the win. MU now sits at 4-1 in the HCAC and is currently in a three-way tie for second place in the league standings. The Spartans will be back in action on Wednesday October 23 at Defiance. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
