NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – Manchester University scored a pair of first half goals and used stout defense to cruise to a 2-0 victory over Franklin College on Wednesday October 16. Manchester improved to 3-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play this fall.
MU tallied its first goal in the 17th minute. Nick Surber (Hebron, Ind./Hebron) played a ball across the box that was collected by Ruben Gonzalez (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Northview). Gonzalez fired the ball into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
Manchester scored again just before the conclusion of the first period. Keegan Wondergem (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) scored from right in front of the net off a Spartan corner kick. Cayden Holley (Centerville, Ind./Centerville) and Nash Walker (West Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) earned assists on the Wondergem goal.
The Spartan defense prevented the visiting Grizzlies from attempting a shot in the first half. For the match, Franklin was held to just one shot. Manchester outshot Franklin 16-1 on Wednesday.
The win improved MU to 6-7-1, 3-1 HCAC this season. Franklin dropped to 4-11, 1-3 HCAC. The Spartans will host Mount St. Joseph on Saturday October 19 at 3:30 p.m. at Good Field. Saturday's match will also be Senior Day.
