Manchester Rallies Past Trine on Wednesday

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Manchester University men's soccer team overcame an early deficit by scoring three straight goals and held on late to topple Trine University 3-2 on Wednesday September 25.

An intense match for the full 90 minutes, the Thunder were awarded a pair of penalty kicks in the first 15 minutes of the game.  Goalie Justin Winterboer (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) stopped the first Thunder PK with a save in the 11th minute.  Just three minutes later, the Thunder were able to convert their second PK of the match to grab an early 1-0 lead.

Manchester scored an equalizer in the 27th minute of the opening half.  Drew Gavit (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) scored his first goal of the 2019 season to bring the Spartans even at 1-1.  Ruben Gonzalez (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Northview) was credited with an assist on the Gavit goal.

Manchester controlled the scoreboard for most of the second half as Josh Gonzalez (Portage, Ind./Portage) scored a pair of goals to help increase the Spartans' advantage to 3-1.  Josh scored in the 49th and 68th minutes.  Gonzalez has scored a team-leading seven goals this year.

Trine made one final push in the closing minutes of Wednesday's contest, converting another penalty kick in the 85th minute.

The big non-conference victory moved Manchester to 3-5-1 on the season and snapped a three-game skid.  Trine fell to 3-3.  The Spartans will have another tough opponent in front of them on Saturday.  Manchester will host No. 7 Calvin College at Good Field on September 28 at 4 p.m.
