JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – Manchester University won its season opener against MacMurray College on Saturday and battled back to earn a draw with Illinois College on Sunday as the 2019 season officially kicked off.
The Spartans raced past the MacMurray Highlanders on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Ruben Gonzalez (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Northview) tallied his first collegiate goal in the seventh minute to give Manchester an early 1-0 lead. Manchester added two more goals, both scored by reigning HCAC Offensive MVP Josh Gonzalez (Portage, Ind./Portage), before the intermission. Gonzalez tallied goals in the 25th and 43rd minutes.
Senior goalie Justin Winterboer (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) made one save in goal and posted a clean sheet.
On the day, the Spartans held advantages in shots (14-5) and corner kicks (7-2).
On Sunday, Manchester battled Illinois College to a 1-1 draw. The Blue Boys got on the scoreboard first in the 12th minute after a goal from Nick Walter.
Manchester rallied to tie the game following halftime with a goal in the 49th minute. Max Baker (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) netted his third career goal on Sunday.
Manchester outshot the Illinois College 20-11. Raul Rubalcava made 11 saves in goal for the Blue Boys.
The Spartans (1-0-1) will host Kalamazoo College on Wednesday September 4 at 2 p.m.
