Gonzalez's hat trick plays vital role in Spartan victory 6-1 victory over Quakers

Manchester started the match off strong with sophmore Josh Gonzalez (Portage, Ind.) scoring their first goal for the match (7:45), assisted by senior Drake DeWitt (Columbia City, Ind). Wanting a goal of his own, senior Drake DeWitt (Columbia City, Ind.) scored the Spartarns second goal (17:49) after being fouled by Earlham College. Manchester finished the first half of the match strong having a total of ten shots on goal and two of which went in the net. Both goals were scored by sophmore Josh Gonzalez (Portage, Ind.), the first (26:03) unassisted and the second goal (27:27) assisted by junior Matthew Roop (West Lafauette, Ind.). The Quakers had a total of three shots on goal in the first half one of which snuck behind senior Justin Meredit (Shelbyville, Ind.) (36:23) giving Earlham this first and only goal of the match. 

Heading into halftime the Spartans lead the Quakers 4 to 1. During halftime, Manchester took the chance to recoginze their seniors: Justin Meredith (Shelbyville, Ind.), Alex Sanders (Kouts, Ind.), Samuel Tetteh-Quarshie (Accra, Ghana), Zach Schmidt (Niles, Mich.), Drake DeWitt (Columbia City, Ind.), Jared Wondergem (Hundsonville, Mich.), and Josh McCoy (LaPorte, Ind.). 

Dominating the first half, the Spartans finshed even stronger than they started. They had a total of six shots on goal during the second half. The Spartans started getting physical causing junior Adrian Mulenga (Avon, Ind.) to get at yellow card (40:49). Shortly after this, seniors Samuel Tetteh-Quarshie (Accra, Ghana) and Drake DeWitt (Columbia City, Ind.) scored Manchesters fifth goal (60:38) putting the Spartans up yet another goal, Sam's first goal and Drake's second for the day. In the 80th minute, senior Jared Wondergem (Hundsonville, Mich.) scored his first goal of the day (81:07) putting the Spartans up 8 to 1 against the Quakers. Justin Meredith (Shelbyville, Ind.) had a easy match only having a total of 7 shots on goal and 1 save. 

The Manchester men's soccer team is back in action Tuesday, October 30 in Hanover, Ind. for the confrence tournamnent. The Spartans will face the Hanover Panthers for the semifinal match with a 2:30pm start.
