Tres Magnifico – Spartans reach .500 in HCAC, roll past Defiance

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – After a touch-and-go first half in which Manchester University tallied a goal in the 15th minute, fans of the Black and Gold got plenty to cheer about in the second half Wednesday, Oct. 18.

The Spartans, improving to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, erupted for six scores in the second 45 minutes. Junior midfielder Josh McCoy sent home his first of the season just over three minutes into the stanza, and senior defender/midfielder/forward Tod Oram (Crown Point, Ind.) buried his second goal of the match and team-best tying fourth of the season just about seven minutes later to send Coach Corey Brueggeman's squad off to the races.

Junior forward Drake DeWitt (Columbia City, Ind.); sophomore midfielder Alex Baker (Fort Wayne, Ind.); sophomore forward Adrian Mulenga (Avon, Ind.,); and freshman midfielder Nick Surber (Hebron, Ind.) added their names to the Spartans' goal registry. Senior goalkeeper Brady Forman (Hastings, Mich.), in a quest for a third consecutive clean sheet, was less than two minutes from extending his scoreless minutes string into the 340s when Defiance College's Christian Meister took advantage of a one-on-one situation on the right side of the box and drifted a shot just to the left of Forman to break the Yellow Jackets' zero on the Good Field scoreboard.

DeWitt's six total shots led a 23-7 advantage for the home team. Oram and freshman forward Josh Gonzalez (Portage, Ind.) were next with three each.

Manchester University takes its three-match win streak on the road Saturday, Oct. 21, taking on Mt. St. Joseph University in a 3:30 p.m. kickoff at Schueler Field.
