Spartans face key league road trip Saturday

Manchester University embarks on a southern journey to the Cincinnati, Ohio area Saturday, Oct. 26, for a Heartland Collegiate Athletic doubleheader at Mt. St. Joseph College.

Match specifics: A 1 p.m. women's match kickoff opens the afternoon at Schueler Field on MSJ's campus with the men's match set for a 3:30 p.m. start.

Spartan Shorts: Men – Coach Dave Good's squad broke up an 11-match winless streak with a 2-1 win over Bluffton University of Ohio Oct. 23. The Spartans, moving to 2-11-2 overall and 1-5 in the conference, received goals from junior forward/midfielder Loic Youth (Detroit, Mich.) and sophomore midfielder Simon Coleman (Toledo, Ohio) … Youth's score, the game-winner in the 69th minute, put him with freshman forward/midfielder Chris Hosier (Kokomo, Ind.) as the only two individuals with game-winning scores and junior midfielder Zac Hansen (Muskegon, Mich.) and sophomore midfielder Jose Luevano (Aguascalientes, Mexico) as the tri-team leaders in goals scored with two each … Sophomore goalkeeper Craig Thacker's (Lebanon, Ind,) five saves against Bluffton put him a tie for fourth on the HCAC saves chart with 50, joining Hanover College's Trevor Korfhagen.

Women – MU (9-6-1 overall, 5-1 HCAC) sits in a tie for second with Rose-Hulman, trailing current conference leader Hanover by a half-match with three to go … The Spartans take to the road harboring the program's longest win skein (five matches) since 2004 … A victory Saturday means the university's first 10-win season since 2006 … The sophomore-junior forward combination of Brandy Crouse (Cleves, Ohio) and Katelyn Barta (Griffith, Ind.) is among the HCAC's top five in goals and points. Barta is second in both, trailing Franklin College's Vanessa Benham by just one goal (12-11) and two points (31-29). Crouse is fifth in each (eight goals/17 points). Barta is also tied for first in assists (seven) and fifth in shots (46). Junior goalkeeper Emily Willmann (Montpelier, Ind.) is part of three defensive statistical categories, ranking first in saves (113) and fourth in saves percentage (84.3) and goals-against average (1.33) … Crouse's rise on the league statistics' charts is due to a recent run in which she's scored goals in five of her last six matches played.
