HCAC slate opens Saturday

Hanover College pays a visit to Spartan Field for the 2013 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener for Manchester University's men's and women's squads Saturday, Oct. 5. MU's men stand 1-6-2, while the women are just under .500 at 4-5-1. The visiting Panthers sport records of 4-5-1 (men) and 7-1-1 (women).

Match specifics: The women's match-up begins at 1 p.m. followed by the men's meeting at 3 p.m. The twinbill is part of MU's Homecoming 2013 festivities.

SPARTAN SHORTS: Men – Sophomore goalkeeper Craig Thacker (Lebanon, Ind.) continues to be part of the HCAC's top five in saves (45) through 10 matches. His total is second-highest in the league, trailing only Franklin College's Lucas Hill (48) … The junior and sophomore midfielder combination of Zac Hansen (Muskegon, Mich.) and Julio Luevano (Aguascalientes, Mexico) top the Spartans' scoring charts. They both have two goals and are in double figures in shot attempts (Luevano 19/Hansen 13). Hansen remains the squad's assists (three) and points (seven) leader, while Luevano's 10 shots on goal are first. Freshman midfielder/forward Chris Hosier (Kokomo, Ind.), with the team's lone game-winning goal, and junior forward Loic Youth (Detroit, Mich.), behind 16 shot attempts, have helped guide the Black and Gold offense, too … Coach Dave Good's program owns three consecutive wins over Hanover in the annual series.
Women - Junior forward Katelyn Barta (Griffith, Ind.) continues to rank high in the conference in goals, points and assists through 10 matches. She's tied for the assists lead (five) and is second, behind only Franklin College's Vanessa Benham, in goals (seven) and points (19). Her assist numbers translate well on to the NCAA Division III report, as she is ranked 41st nationally … Other strong numbers for the Spartans' offensive attack belong to the trio of sophomore forward Brandy Crouse (Cleves, Ohio), junior midfielder Sofie Tzortzinis (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and junior forward Breanna McLane (Westville, Ind.). Crouse's three goals are second-best, while McLane's 20 total shots and 12 shots on goal are second. Tzortzinis joins Barta as the only Black and Gold player with a game-winning goal … Junior goalkeeper Emily Willmann (Montpelier, Ind.) is among the HCAC defensive leaders. Her 80 saves top the conference and are among the top 25 nationally, ranking No. 22 … Hanover has won five straight in the series with MU's last victory occurring in 2006. The two sides played to a 3-3 double overtime draw in 2007.

FRANKLIN TRIP AHEAD: Manchester University's men and women take a southern sojourn to Franklin College's Branigin Field at Faught Stadium for HCAC matches Tuesday, Oct. 8 and Wednesday, Oct. 9. The women face the Grizzlies at 7 p.m. Tuesday with the men's match set for a 7 p.m. start Wednesday.
