Manchester University men's, women's teams conclude non-league play

Manchester University's men's and women's teams close out non-conference play against Ohio Athletic Conference competition Saturday, Sept. 28. The men host Ohio Northern, while the women travel to Wilmington College of Ohio.

Spartan Shorts: Men – The Spartans enter the weekend at 1-5-2 after playing Andrews University of Michigan to a 2-2 double overtime draw Sept. 24. In a wild offensive battle, Manchester University held a 35-19 shots advantage on their hosts which included 15 shot-on-goal strikes at the Cardinals' net … Sophomore midfielder Julio Luevano (Aguascalientes, Mexico), tying for the team lead with his second goal of the season, brought the Black and Gold level in the 42nd minute with a goal off a give-and-go situation with junior midfielder/forward Ellis Whitt (Bourbon, Ind.). Junior forward Loic Youth (Detroit, Mich.), tallying his first score of the season, gave MU a 2-1 lead four minutes into the second half with a well-place shot off a corner kick from junior midfielder Zac Hansen (Muskegon, Mich.). Andrews managed to knot it up for good in the 58th minute … Sophomore goalkeeper Craig Thacker (Lebanon, Ind.) added eight saves to his season total. His 44 rank first in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference … Hansen's assist moved him into a four-way tie for second in the league. He remains the team's points leader (seven), while Luevano's 18 overall shots and 10 shots on goal are first.

Women: Saturday's trip to southern Ohio concludes a stretch of four matches against the OAC. The Black and Gold are 2-1 to date with wins over Muskingum and Heidelberg and a loss to Otterbein … Junior forward Katelyn Barta (Griffith, Ind.) and goalkeeper Emily Willmann (Montpelier, Ind.) continue to be a presence on the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and NCAA Division III statistics reports. Barta is among the top five in the league in goals (second), assists (tied for first), shots (fourth) and points (second), while Willmann's 71 saves lead the way. Willmann's save numbers are 11th-highest in Division III, and Barta is 21st in assists (five) and 26th in points (19). Her seven goals are within the national top 50, ranking 41st.

HCAC Opener: Hanover College comes to North Manchester for 1 and 3 p.m. kickoffs at Spartan Field Saturday, Oct. 5. The doubleheader, featuring the women's match first and men's match second, is part of the university's Homecoming 2013 festivities.
