Transylvania tournament opens fall campaign

Manchester University opens the 2014-15 collegiate men's golf season at the Transylvania University of Kentucky Collegiate Invitational, while the women's program resumes its season at Hanover College's Invitational. Both events are Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 6 and 7.

Tourney Specifics: Tee times are 1 p.m. Saturday and 8:30 a.m. Sunday for the men at the University of Kentucky Big Blue Golf Course in Lexington, Ky. The women tee off at 11:40 a.m. Saturday at Sunrise Falls Golf Course in Madison, Ind., while Sunday's round is set for Shadowood Golf Course in Seymour, Ind. Tee times Sunday will be determined by first round finish.

Spartan Shorts: MU's women started their fall slate with a sixth-place finish at the Olivet College Labor Day Tee-Off Invitational Aug. 30 and 31. The Spartans played The Medalist Golf Club to a 443 total over the first 18 and then came back to slice 15 shots off that mark in the final round for an 871 score for 36 holes. Their first-to-second round improvement was the best in the tourney … MU's freshman class gained strong recognition leading the way during the opener. Kaitlin Powers (Indianapolis, Ind.) was low individual with a 207, good for 34th. Jennifer Oldaker (Kokomo, Ind.) (209) and Madison Yenser (Fort Wayne, Ind.) (226) followed in 36th and a tie for 39th, respectively … The men's program goes into the season with seven upperclassmen on their roster. "This will be an important section," Coach Tara Boone said of the fall campaign. "It all counts now towards making yourself stronger for the NCAA and also prepping to face our always-strong conference in the spring." … With seniors Dylan Crosley of Lapel, Ind.; Michael Rutledge of Granger, Ind.; Quinton Flora of Huntington, Ind.; Mitch Eby of Goshen, Ind.; and Tyler Shearer of Huntington, Ind., helping lead the way, Boone likes what she sees for 2014-15. "We're starting to turn a corner (in the program)," she said. "The players haven't been satisfied to just go out and play rounds for practice. They are asking for instruction on all facets of their game."

Looking Ahead: The Spartans' women's squad hosts its annual invitational Saturday, Sept. 13, at Honeywell Golf Course in Wabash, Ind. MU's men compete in the Ohio Wesleyan University Invitational Sunday and Monday, Sept. 14 and 15.
