LEXINGTON, Ky. – The host Transylvania University Pioneers outlasted the visiting Manchester Spartans in a high-scoring Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup in the Clive M. Beck Center on Saturday. TU won the shootout by a final score of 99-81.
Manchester University controlled the game in the first half and led by as much as nine on two separate occasions. A three-pointer by Keiton Hall (Lansing, Mich./Williamston) with 2:33 left to play in the opening half put the Spartans ahead 42-33. The host Pioneers ended the half on a 10-2 run to trim MU's advantage to just one, 44-43 heading into halftime.
Both teams remained close through the first 10 minutes of play in the second half. Leading by four at the 9:44 mark, the Pioneers ended the game on a 28-14 run.
In the second half alone, both Manchester and Transylvania combined to make 35 field goals and 12 three-pointers.
For the game, Manchester shot 27-of-59 (45.8%) from the floor and 10-of-26 (38.5%) from beyond the arc. The Spartans converted 17-of-22 of their free throw attempts, good for 77.3%.
Jalen Owens (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) led the Spartans with a career-high 23 points. Owens finished 6-of-12 from the floor and made three three-pointers. DeMoines Whitney (Detroit, Mich./Western International) chipped in 12 points. CJ Hampton (Hammond, Ind./Griffith) added 11 points and seven rebounds. Cortiz Buckner (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Jefferson) scored 10 points and dished out six assists.
Transylvania's offense was difficult to stop on Saturday as the Pioneers shot 56.5% (39-of-69) from the field and made 14 three-pointers. Five Pioneers scored in double figures. Spencer McKinney scored 22 points off the bench after making six threes.
The Pioneers improved to 5-2, 2-1 HCAC with the win. The Spartans (3-5, 1-2 HCAC) will take on Capital on Monday December 16 at 6 p.m. in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena.
