Spartans set for critical HCAC battle

Spartans set for critical HCAC battle

A match-up of two of three teams vying for the sixth and final Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament slot is on the docket Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Game details: Manchester University hosts Defiance College at 8 p.m. … Live audio, statistics and video are accessible at, the Internet home of MU athletics … Recent series history shows, with a nip-and-tuck 63-58 victory included on its home Karl H. Weaner Center floor in early December, Defiance has won nine of the last 10.

Spartan Shorts: Coach Gerad Good's team (7-16 overall, 5-11 HCAC) goes into the final week of the regular season tied for sixth with Bluffton University and Defiance College. They own the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Beavers of BU, but the Yellow Jackets captured the first game of the season series to cloud the picture … Coach Good's team looks to end a recent rough patch of five losses in its last six games. MU nearly pieced together a huge loop road win in their last outing, falling 80-79 at Rose-Hulman Feb. 11, concluding a week in which they were edged by four total points in two games. Three players tallied double figures to lead the way, as senior guard Tyler Alexander (Indianapolis, Ind.) and sophomore guard Adrian Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind.) compiled 19 points apiece, and junior guard Kenny Doss (Chicago, Ill.) came off the bench to add 15. Rose-Hulman, who built as large as a 17-point cushion, weathered a second half rally by the Spartans that gave them a 77-76 edge with just over a minute remaining by scoring four of the final six points for an 80-79 decision … Alexander, who's reeled off six straight double-figure scoring outings, continues to have a strong presence on the conference statistics. He's third in field goal percentage (63.5); ranks fourth in points (18.8 pg) and rebounds (7.2 pg); and stands seventh in steals (1.4 pg). Johnson is also in same territory to his upperclassman teammate, as he sits atop the steals category (2.2 pg) and his 82.5 percent conversion rate at the free throw line is 10th-highest. Other Black and Gold individuals in the league's top 10 are freshman guard Erik Bell (Evansville, Ind.) (assists – 3.5 pg – No. 3) and senior guard Chase Casteel (Monrovia, Ind.) (blocked shots – 1 pg. – No. 4).

2017 Senior Day Festivities: A combined group of seven Manchester University men's and women's student-athletes are honored prior to the start of their respective games Saturday, Feb. 18. The Spartans welcome Transylvania University that afternoon for the 2016-17 regular season finales.
