Spartans, Lions resume season set

Spartans, Lions resume season set

Mt. St. Joseph University comes to Stauffer-Wolfe Arena Saturday, Jan. 30, for a critical Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Game details: Tip-off time is 3 p.m. for the men … Live audio, statistics and video for the game can be accessed via a link at www.muspartans.com, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics.

Spartan Shorts: Winners of four of their last six, Manchester University (10-8 overall, 7-4 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) stands tied for third with Rose-Hulman and Hanover on the conference standings. The group is just a game behind second-place Defiance College and two in back of MSJ … The Spartans are responsible for one of the Lions' two league defeats, claiming a 61-54 victory in Cincinnati in early December. It was their first series' win since the 2010-11 campaign … Coach Gerad Good's squad produced a balanced attack with many heroes in a 105-87 overtime triumph over Franklin Jan. 27 which marked the first 100-points-or-more contest since 2009-10 and the most points in a game since 2004-05 for MU. Senior guard Brady Dolezal (Tipton, Ind.) compiled 23 points, 10 rebounds, a blocked shot and three steals, while junior guard Chase Casteel (Monrovia, Ind.) ended with 22 points and a pair of blocked shots to pace the individual efforts which included a key stretch of eight straight points tallied in the final 1:11 of the second half and to begin the overtime. Freshman guard Adrian Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind.), registering his 11th straight double-digit scoring total, ended with 19 points and dished out seven assists; sophomore forward Enis Becirevic (Fort Wayne, Ind.) came off the bench for a glowing six-of-seven field goal effort as part of a 14-point night; and senior forward Matt Brown (Hobart, Ind.) concluded his night with 12 points. Dolezal's double-double was his first this season and third of his career; Casteel's first 20-point-plus effort of 2015-16 highlighted his fifth double-digit outing of the season; and Becirevic continued to be consistent in high field goal percentages, recording his 12th 60-percent-or-better effort in 18 games played. The win cinched the Spartans' first season series sweep against the Grizzlies since 2010-11 and also locked up the program's first double-digit win campaign since 2011-12 … Three Black and Gold players are listed in the league's statistical top five to date. Johnson leads the conference in steals, averaging 1.9 per outing, and is third in scoring (19.1 ppg); Brown continues to top the three-point accuracy column (52.2 percent); and junior guard Blake Brouwer (Elkhart, Ind.) stands third in blocked shots. Casteel is just outside the area, sitting sixth in rebounding (6.6 pg).

Mid-Week Next Week: Manchester University's women welcome Bluffton University Wednesday, Feb. 3, in a 7:30 p.m. start. MU's men pay a visit to BU's Karl H. Weaner Center for a similar tip time.
