Spartan Shorts: Coach Gerad Good's team, fresh off a thrilling 76-74 win at Earlham Jan. 23, stands 9-8 overall and 6-4 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, good for a tie for fourth with Rose-Hulman … MU captured the first game of the season set, winning 88-63 at FC's Spurlock Center earlier this month. The Spartans have claimed seven of the last 12 all-time … A quartet featuring freshman guard Adrian Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind.), junior guards Chase Casteel (Monrovia, Ind.) and Blake Brouwer (Elkhart, Ind.) and senior forward Matt Brown (Hobart, Ind.) is part of the conference's current statistical top five. Johnson, with his 10-game double-figure scoring streak playing a key role, is third in scoring, averaging 19.1 points per outing and is also atop the steals' category (1.9 pg); Brown's 52.2 percent three-point field goal accuracy leads the way; Brouwer has risen to third in blocked shots (one per game); and Casteel is fifth in rebounding (6.9 pg) … Casteel buried a huge three-point bucket during the final 1:41 of the extra session to help lift the Black and Gold past the Quakers last weekend. He ended his day with a productive line of six points and seven rebounds, while Johnson concluded a 65-point week with 33 points to go with 10 assists for his first double-double, and Brown tossed in 17 points … Johnson harbors a roll of three successive outings in which he's hit 10-or-more field goals, while the 33-point outburst at EC was among the program's best single-game marks and the 10 assists were the most in a game since 2008-09 … Manchester University stands a win shy of reaching its first 10-or-more victory campaign since 2011-12.
