Spartan Shorts: Winners of four of their last five, the Black and Gold (6-6 overall, 3-2 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) has risen into a three-way tie for fourth on the league standings. The recent span has seen MU shoot better than 53 percent from the field (53.3), out-rebound its opponents over six boards per contest (36.2-30) and average 82 points a game compared to the opposition's 65.4. Freshman guard Adrian Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind.)is one of the biggest catalysts, averaging 20.2 points, more than four assists and better than two steals per outing while hitting at 55.7 percent from the field and right at 50 percent from beyond the arc. The senior combination of forward Matt Brown (Hobart, Ind.) and guard Brady Dolezal (Tipton, Ind.) aren't far behind at 13.8 and 13.2 points per game, respectively, in the stretch with Brown draining three-point buckets at a stratospheric 61.5 percent rate and grabbing nearly six boards per appearance … Manchester University's recent roll continued Wednesday with an 88-63 win at Franklin. Johnson led the attack  posting the program's first individual 30-points-plus outing since January of 2015 with 30 to go along with team bests in assists (four) and steals (three). His credentials, through 12 games, include 10 double-figure scoring totals and three contests of 20-or-more points over his last five appearances … Five individuals are ranked within the current HCAC statistical top fives. Johnson leads the way in steals (2.1 pg) as does Brown in three-point field goal accuracy (52.9); junior guard Chase Casteel (Monrovia, Ind.)is third in rebounding (7.3 pg); junior guard Blake Brouwer (Elkhart, Ind.) is tied for fourth in blocked shots (one per contest); and sophomore forward Enis Becirevic (Fort Wayne, Ind.) is second in field goal percentage (63.2) … Rose-Hulman, due to a sweep of the 2015-16 meetings, holds a slim 8-6 edge in recent series history.
