Spartan Shorts: Manchester University climbed into sixth on the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings behind a 95-64 win over Earlham College Jan. 2. They trail a five-way logjam for the top spot by just a game … The Spartans (5-6 overall, 2-2 HCAC) have numerous individuals within the current HCAC statistical top 10s. The tandem of freshman guard Adrian Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind.) and senior guard Brady Dolezal (Tipton, Ind.) is No. 9 and 10, respectively, in points per game (15.1 ppg – Johnson/14.8 ppg – Dolezal; junior guard Chase Casteel (Monrovia, Ind.) has the third-best rebounding average (7.4 pg); the trio of sophomore forward Enis Becirevic (Fort Wayne, Ind.), Dolezal and senior forward Matt Brown (Hobart, Ind.) are No. 4, No. 8 and No. 10 (Becirevic – 61.1/Dolezal – 53.1/Brown – 50) in field goal percentage; Brown is the conference leader (54.5 pct.) and Johnson ranks No. 6 (42.1 pct.) in three-point field goal percentage; Johnson's two steals per contest top the league; and junior guard Blake Brouwer (Elkhart, Ind.) is tied for third in blocked shots per game (1.1) … Last weekend's win over Earlham provided many highlights. Brown's 23-point outing was a personal single-game season high and his first 20-points-plus effort since February of last season, while MU's 10 made treys marked the most in a game since February of last year, too. The Spartans' 95-point total was the program's most since a win over Kalamazoo in November of 2012, and it was the second time in the last three contests the Black and Gold have tallied 90-or-more on the scoreboard to help lift their points per game average to a season-best 75.4 … The series against Franklin has been nip and tuck of late. MU holds a 6-5 edge in the last 11 contests.
Rose-Hulman Trip: MU's men and women take on the Fightin' Engineers in Terre Haute, Ind., Saturday, Jan. 9.
