2014-15 home season wraps up Wednesday

The final week of the 2014-15 regular season opens with Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference clashes against Defiance College Wednesday, Feb. 18.

Game specifics: Tip;-off times are 7:30 p.m. for the men and women … The men's contest is set for Stauffer-Wolfe Arena on Manchester University's campus with the women's game being held inside the Karl H. Spartan Shorts: The Spartans pay tribute to guard Caleb Jackson (New Castle, Ind.) and forward Glendon Yoder (LaGrange, Ind.) prior to tipoff, as they play in their final home game. MU's cheerleading squad also recognizes its four seniors during the ceremony … MU sports a 5-18 overall and 4-12 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference record. They are coming off a 75-57 defeat at the hands of league-leading Mt. St. Joseph University this past weekend … Sophomore guard Chase Casteel (Monrovia, Ind.) led the attack against MSJ in the Black and Gold's most recent contest. He finished with 25 points, five rebounds and an assist, hitting on 14-of-15 free throw attempts in the process. Junior guard Brady Dolezal (Tipton, Ind.) and Jackson were next on the scoring charts with eight and seven points, respectively. Sophomore guard Blake Brouwer (Elkhart, Ind.), despite a tough shooting afternoon that left him with four points, did grab a team-high six rebounds and blocked two MSJ shot attempts … Casteel's 14 successful charity tosses were the most in a game for an MU player since Jon Thompson hit the same number last January against Earlham, and he produced his fourth 20-point-plus contest in his last eight appearances, as his season points average rose to 11 per game … Manchester University is within the top 10 of six HCAC statistical categories going into the final week of the season. Brouwer is among three of them, as he ranks fourth in three-point field goal percentage (44.6), eighth in overall field goal percentage (52.7) and is tied for seventh in blocked shots (.7 pg). Jackson and junior forward Matt Brown (Hobart, Ind.) round out the Spartans' appearances. Jackson ranks sixth in assists (3.4 per game), and Brown is eighth in free throw percentage (83.1) and fourth in scoring (17.3 points per game) … MU holds residence in the top 50 of four categories of the current NCAA Division III statistics. The team is in the top 25 of fewest total fouls (322 – No. 23) and fewest fouls per game (14.6 – No. 14) and is No. 46 in fewest turnovers per game (11.7). Individually, Brown and Jackson are in the top 50 in minutes per contest (Brown  - 40th – 35:09/Jackson – 45th – 34:57) … Defiance has won six in a row in the series which includes an 89-50 final in early December. The Spartans' most recent victory occurred at home in 2011-12.

Regular Season Finale: MU takes a southern trip to Hanover College Saturday, Feb. 21. Game times are 3 p.m. (women) and 5 p.m. (men) at Collier Arena.
