Franklin visit next for Spartans

The second half of the 2014-15 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rolls along Wednesday, Jan. 28.

Game specifics: Manchester University's men's team plays at the Spurlock Center on Franklin College's campus … Game time is 7:30 p.m. … Live audio, video and statistics are available via links at www.muspartans.com, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics.

Spartan Shorts: MU (5-12 overall, 4-6 HCAC) takes a three-game streak, the program's longest since 2010-11, on the road. The Spartans have risen into a tie for seventh with Bluffton University of Ohio, just a game out of the top six, due to the run. Franklin (4-13 overall, 3-7 HCAC) stopped a four-game skid last weekend, upending conference leader Mt. St. Joseph University of Ohio 76-71 at home. Six of the last 10 series wins have gone the way of the Black and Gold, but the Grizzlies claimed the 2014-15 edition opener 91-82 three weeks ago in North Manchester … It's been a recurring theme in recent weeks for Manchester University. A 92-87 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Earlham College proved no different Jan. 24 in their most recent outing. The Spartans put five players in double figures, marking the sixth successive game in which three-or-more team members have tallied 10-or-more points. Junior forward Matt Brown (Hobart, Ind.) continued a strong skein, too, registering his eighth consecutive double-digit outing with 29 points on seven-of-13 overall and four-of-eight three-point field goal shooting. Brown's numbers weren't the only keys to a sizzling 50.9 percent overall and 40 percent three-point field goal afternoon. Junior guard Brady Dolezal (Tipton, Ind.) contributed 16 points, while the underclassman guard duo of sophomore Chase Casteel (Monrovia, Ind.) and Brody Kirby (Frankfort, Ind.) added 15 points apiece, and sophomore guard Blake Brouwer (Elkhart, Ind.) chipped in 11 points … MU's 92 points were the program's most in a game since the 2012-13 squad posted 95 in a win over Kalamazoo. Along individual lines, Casteel's sixth consecutive double-digit game moved his points per game average to a season-best 7.9, while Brown's current eight-game double-digit scoring run is further spotlighted by the fact that he's totaled 20-or-more points four times in the span … Brown and Brouwer, through 17 games, are among the conference's top five statistically. The junior forward has climbed into fourth in scoring (17.3 ppg), while the sophomore guard is fifth in field goal accuracy (55.1 percent). Brouwer, among the top 10 in three categories, is just shy of the top five in three-point field goal conversion (No. 6 – 42.9 pct.) and is seventh-best in blocked shots (.7 pg). Senior guard Caleb Jackson (New Castle, Ind.) continues his way up the HCAC assists chart, ranking fourth with an average of 3.6 per game.

WEEKEND SCHEDULE: Transylvania University of Kentucky pays a visit to Stauffer-Wolfe Arena for a doubleheader Saturday, Jan. 31. Tip-off times are 1 p.m. for the women and 3 p.m. for the men.
