Spartan Shorts: MU (4-12 overall, 3-6 HCAC) opened its two-game week with a resounding 77-58 win over Bluffton University Wednesday. The Spartans put four players in double figures, shot a blistering 61.2 percent from the field overall and just under 53 percent from outside the arc, out-rebounded the visiting Beavers 30-24 and used a strong defense to limit their opposition to less than 42 percent field goal shooting. Sophomore guard Chase Casteel (Monrovia, Ind.) tallied a career single-game high 27 points to guide the Black and Gold. Reeling off his fifth straight double-figure effort, he was 10-of-14 from the field which included hitting on five-of-eight three-point attempts while also grabbing six rebounds and blocking a BU shot attempt. Junior forward Matt Brown (Hobart, Ind.) also resumed an impressive personal string, earning his seventh double-figure scoring game in a row, behind a 16-point, six-rebound night. The guard duo of sophomore Blake Brouwer (Elkhart, Ind.) and junior Brady Dolezal (Tipton, Ind.) each chipped in 12 points … The Spartans' recent success has related to a stretch of five straight games in which they've had three-or-more players end in scoring double figures … Casteel's scoring and rebounding numbers have been on an ethereal climb over the last five games. His scoring average is up over four full points (3.4 – 7.5), and his rebounding average has risen eight-tenths (3.1 – 3.9) in the span … Dolezal, coming back into the line-up against BU after an injury had sidelined him for the past two weeks, picked up where he left off with his 12th double-figure scoring game in 13 appearances. The junior was five-of-nine from the field in 24 minutes … Brown has risen to fourth in the conference in scoring (16.4 ppg) and is joined by Dolezal (No. 10 – 14.3 ppg) in the first 10. Brouwer continues his stay in the top five of overall (56.4) and three-point (45.5) field goal percentage and is just off a similar pace in blocked shots (No. 7 - .6 pg), while senior guard Caleb Jackson (New Castle, Ind.) is in the top 10 in regards to assists (No. 6 – 3.5 pg) … MU holds a 6-3 series edge since Earlham joined the HCAC.
