Away, home week begins Wednesday

A busy first month of 2015 rolls on for the Manchester University men's basketball team Wednesday, Jan. 14. The Black and Gold face off against Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Anderson University.

Game specifics: Tip-off time is 7:30 p.m. at AU's O.C. Lewis Gymnasium … Live audio, stats and video for the game can be accessed via links at www.muspartans.com, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics.

Spartan Shorts: Manchester University sports a 2-11 overall and 1-5 conference record … The Spartans nearly ridded themselves of their current six-game skid with a nip-and-tuck 64-61 loss at the hands of Transylvania University of Kentucky Jan. 10. Freshman guard Brody Kirby (Frankfort, Ind.) led the charge for the Black and Gold registering a personal single-game high 16 points. He didn't stop his contributions there, either, as he also dished out two assists and blocked two Pioneer shot attempts. Joining the impressive underclassman marks, sophomore guards Chase Casteel (Monrovia, Ind.) and Blake Brouwer (Elkhart, Ind.) ended with 13 and 14 points, respectively. Junior forward Matt Brown (Hobart, Ind.) was just off a double-double, tallying 11 points and seven rebounds. The Spartans, limiting their hosts to just over 21 percent overall and 18.8 percent from outside the arc shooting in the first 20 minutes, scored 13 of the game's first 18 points and continued to hold a 27-20 lead at halftime. Appearing on the verge of a big league road victory, MU remained in front 58-54 with 3:14 left before TU answered with a decisive 10-3 run … Brouwer's afternoon wrapped up a strong week. He tallied 35 points against Franklin College and Transylvania for a 17.5 points per game average. The two-game set saw his season average rise better than a point (10.4-11.5). The sophomore is also harboring a run of three successive contests in which he's hit multiple three-pointers. Casteel had a big week, too, averaging 11.5 points per outing versus FC and TU to raise his season total nearly a point-and-a-half (3.4 – 4.8). MU's 10 treys equaled their effort against Earlham College Dec. 6 as a single-season high. They've hit eight-or-more in nine contests … Brouwer remains in the conference's top five in overall (55.3 pct.) and three-pt. field goal pct. (47.4). Brown is just off the top five in scoring, as his 14.6 ppg are less than a point-and-a-half shy, and senior guard Brady Dolezal (Tipton, Ind.), one spot behind Brown in eighth, is close as well at 14.5 ppg. Senior guard Caleb Jackson (New Castle, Ind.) continues to climb the league's assist and blocked shot standings, ranking fourth in assists (3.5 pg) and tied for eighth, with Brouwer, in blocked shots (.5 pg) … The Spartans – Ravens series has seen split decisions in four of the last seven seasons. AU captured both games a year ago.

Hanover Twinbill: A run of three successive Saturday home doubleheaders opens Jan. 17 with Hanover College's visit to North Manchester.
