Late rally ends short in final non-conference tilt

HANCOCK, MICH. – Manchester University nearly overturned an 11-point deficit in the final five minutes Monday, Dec. 29.

However, the host Finlandia University Lions (6-8) remained perfect at home with a 68-65 decision over the Black and Gold (2-8). MU whittled a 61-50 score with 4:08 to go to as little as two (67-65) and had a final possession to tie but was turned over by the home team defense.

Junior forward Matt Brown (Hobart, Ind.) registered his first career double-double to lead the attack. He turned in his second 20-point-plus and eighth double-figure scoring total of 22 points, due to four-of-nine shooting from outside the arc and a four-of-five effort at the charity stripe to go with his seven-of-16 effort from the field overall, and grabbed a personal single-game high 11 rebounds. His individual single-game bests didn't stop there, as he also dished out five assists.

Sophomore guard Blake Brouwer (Elkhart, Ind.) nearly joined Brown in double-double territory with 14 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Brady Dolezal (Tipton, Ind.) resumed his impressive string with a 22nd double-digit point total in his last 23 appearances by tallying 10 points. Junior forward Jarod Schrock (Logansport, Ind.) turned in a six-point, seven-rebound, three-assist game.

MU moves back into Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday, Jan. 3. The Spartans travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, for a 5 p.m. tip-off at Mt. St. Joseph University.

NOTES: Brouwer grabbed five-or-more rebounds for the fourth time this season, while Schrock did so for the sixth time and fourth straight contest. Schrock's glass numbers are up seventh-tenths (5.2 – 5.9) in the span … Brown's totals moved him into first in scoring (14.9 points per game), second in rebounding (4.8 pg) and third in assists (17) on the season charts … Finlandia put three players in double figures and turned the ball over just four times en route to the win.
