Spartan Shorts – The Spartans take a 1-4 record to Defiance … MU is coming off a pair of hard-fought losses at the 2014 HCAC – Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Challenge Nov. 29 and 30. They had a good look at a game-tying three-pointer in the final minute of a 63-58 loss to Kalamazoo College and trimmed a 17-point deficit to six with less than two and a half minutes to go before Trine University held on for a 78-68 victory … The junior trio of forwards Matt Brown (Hobart, Ind.) and Jarod Schrock (Logansport, Ind.) and guard Brady Dolezal (Tipton, Ind.) lead the scoring chart through five games. Brown, thanks in large part to a career single-game high 29-point total against TU Nov. 30, is averaging 16 points a game, while Dolezal, carrying a string of 17 double-figure scoring outputs in his last 18 appearances, is second (13.2 ppg). Schrock, the squad rebounding leader (5.2 pg), is third in scoring (10.6 ppg). Other team firsts belong to senior guard Caleb Jackson (New Castle, Ind.) (21 assists and four blocked shots) and the trio of Dolezal and freshman guards Derek Way (Fairland, Ind.) and Brody Kirby (Frankfort, Ind.) (four steals) … The 2014-15 squad picked up 32 points on the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference coaches' poll, released early last month. They were just 11 points behind Franklin College, in sixth, and eight back of Bluffton University of Ohio for seventh. Sophomore guard Blake Brouwer (Elkhart, Ind.), Dolezal and Schrock represented the Black and Gold in the Players to Watch section.
League Road Trip: The Black and Gold go to Richmond, Ind., for an HCAC twinbill against Earlham College Saturday, Dec. 6.
