Spartan Shorts: The Spartans stand 5-16 overall and 4-10 in the conference going into a run of three straight road games. They are part of a three-way tie for seventh, two games behind Transylvania University for the sixth and final postseason tournament slot … An 85-65 loss to league-leading Rose-Hulman in their last game Feb. 8 was spotlighted by eight players being in the scoring column. Sophomore guard Brady Dolezal (Tipton, Ind.), continuing a meteoric 2013-14 campaign, tossed in 28 points for his ninth straight double-figure scoring game. He was consistent from the field and free throw line hitting nine-of-11 opportunities in each area. Freshman guard Chase Casteel (Monrovia, Ind.) came off the bench to post 11 points and round out the Black and Gold's double-digit scorers. Junior forward Jon Thompson (Rushville, Ind.) was just off double figures with nine points to go with five rebounds and two assists, while freshman guard Blake Brouwer (Elkhart, Ind.) added seven points and grabbed eight rebounds … Dolezal's total was his fourth 20-points-plus outing in his last five games, while Casteel posted his fifth double figure game of the season. Brouwer, closing a set in which he averaged nearly 10 boards per appearance, saw his season average rise six-tenths (3.3 – 3.9) … Sophomore forward Jarod Schrock (Logansport, Ind.) is in the HCAC's top five in blocked shots, average nine-tenths per game for the number five spot. Other strong MU rankings including junior guard Grant Newlin (Muncie, Ind.) in steals (No. 11 – 1.1 pg) and Brouwer (three-point field goal accuracy – No. 14 – 37.5) … AU claimed the season opener, winning 81-71 in North Manchester last month. The two sides have split the yearly games in four of the last six seasons.
Ohio Trek: MU's men and women go to the College of Mt. St. Joseph for a conference doubleheader Saturday, Feb. 15. Game times are 3 p.m. for the women and 5 p.m. for the men.
