NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Manchester University Spartans earned a doubleheader split with visiting Transylvania University on Sunday afternoon.
In between games, the Manchester baseball team honored its graduating class of Collin Bice, Tyler LaFollette, Jordan Hilyard, John Magers, Matt Pritz, Braxton Riley, Christian Smith, and Craig Overpeck during an on-field ceremony. John Magers, who suffered a season ending injury, threw out a ceremonial first pitch before game two.
Game 1 – Transylvania 7, Manchester 3 – Box Score
The Pioneers rallied late with a five-run eighth inning to grab a 7-3 victory in game one of Sunday's doubleheader.
Trailing the Pioneers 2-0 in the bottom of the second, a sacrifice fly by Michael Pinarski (Goshen, Ind. / Goshen) drew Manchester within a run. Pinarksi would then draw a bases-loaded walk in the fourth to tie the game at 2-2. Manchester's very next batter, Braxton Riley (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Wayne), also drew a walk with the bases loaded that gave MU a 3-2 lead.
Nick Rush (Terre Haute, Ind. / Terre Haute North) had three of Manchester's seven hits in game one.
Game Two – Manchester 5, Transylvania 3 – Box Score
Manchester earned a split with the Pioneers after earning a 5-3 victory in the second contest on Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Christian Smith (Indianapolis, Ind. / Mt. Vernon) hit a sacrifice fly to right and then Braxton Riley followed with a run-scoring single to left-center field.
The Pioneers battled back with three runs in the top of the third.
Manchester seized back the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth as the Spartans plated three runs. Michael Pinarski and Tyler LaFollette (Warsaw, Ind. / Warsaw) both had RBI singles in the inning. A passed ball allowed the third Spartan run to score.
Manchester totaled 13 hits in game two. Brett Kron (Cincinnati, Ohio / Oak Hills) led the offense with three hits. Four other Spartans had multi-hit efforts.
Manchester also got strong pitching from senior Jordan Hilyard (Decatur, Ind. / Bellmont). Hilyard went six and a third innings and scattered seven hits. Michael Pinarski allowed just one hit in two and two third innings of relief to earn his fourth save of the season.
With the split, Manchester moved to 13-22, 7-8 HCAC on the season. Transylvania moved to 15-20, 8-8 HCAC. The Spartans will host Earlham College on Friday May 3 at 1 p.m. at Gratz Field in the 2019 home finale.
