Spartans Split at Ohio Wesleyan on Sunday

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Manchester University baseball team split a pair of Sunday games at Ohio Wesleyan University.  With Sunday's split, Manchester took three of four weekend games against the Battling Bishops.

Game 1 – Ohio Wesleyan 6, Manchester 4 – Box Sore

OWU defeated Manchester University in the first game on Sunday morning.  Game one was a shortened, 7-inning contest.

Canyon McWilliams homered in the home half of the 1st inning, giving the Battling Bishops a 2-0.  OWU never trailed in game one.

Tyler LaFollette (Warsaw, Ind. / Warsaw) went 2-4 and drove in two runs in the first game on Sunday.  Christian Smith (Indianapolis, Ind. / Mt. Vernon) also collected two hits and drove in a run.  Nick Tillman (Lawrenceburg, Ind. / East Central) scored two of MU's four runs.

Game 2 – Manchester 13, Ohio Wesleyan 7 – Box Score

The Spartans bounced back in the second game of the day, topping Ohio Wesleyan by a final score of 13-7

The Manchester offense jumped on the Bishops early and often in game two.  Nick Rush (Terre, Haute Ind. / Terre Haute North) got the Spartans on the scoreboard in the top of the 1st inning after hitting a two-run double to left center. 

MU added five runs in the second frame.  A walk with the bases loaded gave Manchester a 3-0.  Tyler LaFollette broke the game open with a grand slam to left center.  LaFollette's grand slam was his first home run of the season. 

Leading 7-2 in the top of the 6th inning, Christian Smith drove home a pair of runs with a single up the middle.  Manchester University added four more runs in the seventh frame.  Rush drove in two more runs with a single to right.  A wild pitch then gave the Spartans a 12-7 advantage.  Smith again delivered a run-scoring base hit; he finished with three hits in four at bats.

Tyler LaFollette went 3-5 with four RBI and three runs scored.  Nick Rush went 2-5 with four RBI.

Carter Hooks (Rochester, Ind. / Rochester) won earned his second win of the weekend after throwing 5.1 innings in his first collegiate start. 

Manchester moved to 5-13 on the season and will now gear up for Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.  The Spartans will host the Hanover College Panthers at Gratz Field on Saturday March 30 in a doubleheader.  First pitch from Gratz Field is scheduled for Noon.
