TIFFIN, Ohio – The Manchester University baseball team split a Sunday afternoon doubleheader with the Heidelberg University Student Princes. HU took game one of the day 10-7 but the Spartans rallied for a 6-2 victory in game two.
Game 1 – Heidelberg 10, Manchester 7
The Student Princes, winners of six straight entering Sunday, jumped out to a 9-1 lead through four innings.
The Spartans battled back with six runs in the top of the 5th inning. Nick Rush (Terre Haute, Ind. / Terre Haute North) started the big inning with an RBI single to right center field. Brett Kron (Cincinnati, Ohio / Oak Hills) drove in another run with a single to left. A pair of wild pitches allowed two more Spartans to cross the plate. The inning was capped by a single to left by Christian Smith (Indianapolis, Ind. / Mt. Vernon) that scored a pair of runs.
Game 2 – Manchester 6, Heidelberg 2
Freshman pitcher Austin Kresl (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Carroll) threw eight strong innings and helped power the Spartans to their second win of the season in game two of Sunday's doubleheader with the Student Princes. Kresl needed just 76 pitches to get through eight innings, and pitched into the final frame, before Jacob Van Pelt (Parker City, Ind. / Delta) sealed the win. Kresl scattered seven hits and allowed just two runs while striking out four batters.
The Manchester offense also got off to an early start in game two on Sunday as the Spartans jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the 1st inning. Nick Rush delivered a two-run double to left center and then was driven in on a sac fly from Ryan Mueller (Cincinnati, Ohio / Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy).
Manchester added a run in the top of the 3rd as Christian Smith hit an RBI single to left. MU took a 5-0 lead in the 4th as Mueller added his second sac fly of the game. Braxton Riley (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Wayne) added an RBI single in the 7th.
Manchester and Heidelberg will play a single, nine-inning contest tomorrow at Gratz Field that will begin at 4 p.m. Live stats for that contest will be provided.
