NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – A huge late innings rally by Manchester University highlighted a nip-and-tuck battle with North Coast Athletic Conference foe Wabash College Sunday, April 22.
After the visiting Little Giants bolted out to a 7-1 lead through four and a half innings, Coach Rick Espeset's crew began to work their way back. Freshman designated player/infielder Joe Henschel (Huntertown, Ind.) spearheaded the comeback that eventually brought the Black and Gold even at 8-8 going into the ninth. Henschel was three-for-six, scored a run and drove in four with the biggest safety occurring in the eighth when he dropped a hit down the left field line that chased three runs home.
After a scoreless ninth, Wabash, improving to 22-9, plated two scores in the 10th for a 10-8 lead. The Spartans were on the verge of answering, as sophomore pinch hitter Joe Gallatin (Muncie, Ind.) drove in a score with a sacrifice fly making the count 10-9, but a hard hit ball to the left-center field gap off the bat of freshman third baseman Nick Tillmann (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) was tracked down for the last out. When the dust settled, the Spartans (16-16) wound up with three multiple-hit individual outings, as sophomore outfielder Quinton Rumsey (Auburn, Ind.) tallied two, and freshman outfielder Hunter Freeman (Fort Wayne, Ind.) finished with three to join Henschel.
The Spartans begin eight in a row on the road to conclude the regular season Tuesday, April 24. They take an eastern trek to Defiance College's Craig A. Rutter Field for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
