Late-inning rally stops Spartans

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Sophomore second baseman Isaiah Knight-Neraasen (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and junior outfielder Braxton Riley (Fort Wayne, Ind.) each collected two hits, guiding Manchester University's offense Tuesday, April 10.

The duo each added a run scored and run-batted-in to their late afternoon/early season totals at Gratz Field. Freshman infielder Nick Tillman (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) and junior outfielder Tyler LaFollette (Warsaw, Ind.) also drove in runs, and LaFollette's safety was a double. Despite those accolades, it wasn't enough to off-set a six-run eighth inning charge by National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' opponent Indiana Tech, as the Warriors took the return trip east with an 8-4 win in hand.

MU (13-12) held a 3-1 edge into the sixth and still had the upper hand by a 3-2 count going into the eighth. The Warriors, winning their eight straight and moving to 22-14, took advantage of some touch luck defense and the long ball, clouting a three-run shot to right and a two-run blast to left center in the frame, in route to the comeback.

Junior hurler Deric Haynes (Goshen, Ind.) threw four strong innings in the start, striking out four Tech hitters and allowing only one run on one hit. The visiting staff shut down the Black and Gold after they struck for three off their starter, as Manchester University was held to five hits and no earned runs over the final six at-bats.

MU returns to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action Wednesday, April 11. Bluffton University pays a visit to North Manchester for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
